Budgeting apps dangerous?

Hi.
I'm trying to take control if finances and reduce spending.
Money Dashboard app comes out as a top app and reviewed as completely safe. There are a number of others.
I downloaded it and started to set it up. It required a lot if info to link accounts. I couldn't remember one part of a login so phoned bank. They warned me that it was not safe. This makes perfect sense to me and I'd already thought a lot about whether to use an app but all online searches state that they are safe to link accounts to.

Does anyone have any knowledge/advice?

It seems unwise to give any third party access to your accounts.

Money saving expert is an excellent site, maybe you can get more advice there. I know they have spreadsheets you can use to set up budget etc.
