Passport id needed on the gov website to prove identity for pension?

I was going to look into my pension on the gov website and provided all the usual self assessment account info to log in but it then also wanted my passport details. Has anyone else done this and know if that's correct?

Thanks

I think it's correct
Not everyone has a passport, so perhaps it is not a compulsory question/answer

There are a variety of methods they can use for ID however I think the passport one is easiest for them to link to you as it's Government issused, a bit like how you can link your passport for driving licence renewal and use the passport photo rather than providing a new one.

I don't have a passport but was able to access it the last time I tried, needed details from recent pay slips, amount of tax paid iirc.

I used the method where you only need NI number and recent payslips. The payslips had to be very recent ie one or two months - anything order than that it would judge as incorrect...

Thanks all I am self employed so don't have payslip info. I do have a passport but it seemed strange having already provided password and texted security code that I needed yet more ID.

OP I think the information it asks for from your payslip is the amount of NI contributions deducted... not sure if it would apply to you? It might have asked for my tax code, too.

My husband has an Irish passport so couldn't verify on his self assessment. I gave up but tried again last week using our address and other details and It went through!

Thanks both.

Koolaider that is very weird, maybe I will give it another go. If that doesn't work I will ring them and check.
