I sent off a ppi claim, they have replied using a part redacted account number asking for copies of my old statements.

The accounts from around 1996 so I don’t have them.

How can they have the account number but no details? Also dh had payouts from them last year but none of his cards or loans had ppi listed on them either but they paid his back to 2003.

It's over twenty years ago. It would be poor practice for them to have detailed records from that far back.

If you're confident that you have a claim then surely you can provide evidence of your assertion?

I don’t have any statements. We’ve moved 6 times since then, so only tax stuffs been kept.

I can’t get over the fact that they still have the account number. I’m going to do an SAR.

From something so long ago it's amazing that they have anything at all. Sending an SAR is a good idea to see exactly what information they hold but it sounds like they have an account number and not much else hence the reason they are asking you what information you have.
If you have proof of PPI being paid it's sounds like they will reimburse you but without proof they are under no obligation to do anything. See what comes back from an SAR and take if from there.
