Housing allowance

I ve been told I can claim housing allowance for a private let from the council, however when I spoke to the job center/ universal credit people they said that I would have to report and change in my online application for the allowance, however I haven’t moved into the house yet so would I have to wait until the first of the month when I get my universal credit through to pay rent? Or would they just give it to me as soon as we move? X

You need to report the change within the relevant assessment period (i.e tell them before the end of the assessment period when the change happens) and it'll actually be paid back to the start of the assessment period. You'll need to provide a tenancy agreement and probably other evidence.

You'll receive the money on your normal payment date, but depending on the dates of your AP and when you move, it might take a few weeks.
