How do I get my gas and electric switched from a pay as you go metre to a monthly/quarterly bill payment?

I’m trying to sort my money out, save more each month, have down graded my mobile phone and swithpched my credit card balance to a 0% card, next on my list is my gas and electric, I am on a pay as you go metre with E, they do not do any other tariffs so I need to switch to another energy supplier and switch over to a monthly or quarterly bill but it seems impossible to switch from a pay as you go metre. How do I do it?

When we bought our house there were PAYG meters for gas and electric. I rang British Gas and they changed the meters for free. Obviously they were our chosen supplies, so I don't know if other utility companies change meters too.

I think that’s my problem, the company only do PAYG. I will contact British Gas and see if they can switch me over to them, I don’t think I’m tied to the company I am with as I have been with them over a year.

I had this. PayG with SSE when I moved in. I called up EDF who I wanted to go back to, and they just changed me over. They didn't even need to come and change anything at the house!
I was impressed how efficient they were. I then had to chase previous provider to refund what I had on the prepayment.

British Gas aren't that cheap. Make sure you shop around.

British Gas are dear, but will change the meters to credit ones for free, most companies charge. You need to pass a pretty fierce credit check though! I failed it twice because of trivial things (having moved recently for instance).
Money Saving Expert has a good page, in their energy section.

If you have 6 months proof of payment with NPower, they will change your meters for free without all the credit check stuff. They'll just need addresses of where you were supplied by them. That might be the case with other suppliers as well so have a look around.

It seems to be the big companies that will do it for free.

British gas have done me a estimate and it's higher than what I'm paying now by about £50 A month 😮

Thanks for tue link, I will have a read when I have woken up a bit. I was with British gas before PAYG bit won't be going back to them.
