Life insurance for middle-aged slacker

I'm getting my financial house in order and want to get some life insurance should the worst happen.

I'm 45 with 2 young children, ex-smoker and have ongoing health conditions (mental health)...

I've tried a few online applications and been rejected outright. Other quotes range from 115-320/month.

Does anyone have any advice re taking a policy in a similar position to me or an alternative route for the money?

Genetically designed to live forever and not planning to die any time soon - however as a single mum want to be able to leave the children choices.

Are you employed? If so does your employer offer life assurance as part of your benefits package? Or do you have death in service benefits as part of your company pension?
