Help with water bill

After some advise....

Lived in my flat 9 years, 2 bedroom flat (first I've owned not rented).

Always paid water bill by DD and am on a meter so never questioned. I've received a letter today asking to check my property water tap etc as it seems another flat in our block may be paying too much and is too little.

Asked a few friends what they pay and it seems I'm massively underpaying, as I had a meter and never needed to pay a water bill before it's not something I questioned (rentals I've had included water).

So my question is where do in stand with a back bill as it's clearly not my error? 9 years back payment could be several thousand pounds and I've just been made redundant so simply don't have it.
Also once I'm back in work we are wanting to move so need to avoid any CCJs?!

Does anyone know where I stand/what I can do?

Thanks

Suggest the water company comes round to check all the water meters themselves
If there is a water leak, I believe they can detect this via the meter
