Income based JSA/bursaries/free school meals

Dh and I have an interview tomorrow to sign on for income based JSA. We have been asked to bring details of ds's bursary award. His bursary is worth about £17k a year but we obviously don't receive any money ourselves. Ds is in year 11 so we don't want to remove him. Why do they need that information and will it affect our claim? Also we are struggling to provide a proper packed lunch for our dd (year 6). Do we have to wait for our claim to be approved- which could take 2 weeks before we can claim free school meals or will we get a provisional acceptance? TIA

Ds's school provide meals as part of their fees.
