Free school meals

Asking on behalf of a friend who is currently going through a very difficult and stressful time at the moment.

Her husband died a few weeks ago, they have 2 teenagers. Low income household, she earns £10,000 and claims working tax credits.

Is it possible to claim free school meals? I don’t think she can but I’m not sure. She is worried about money and is grieving and I am trying to help her but don’t know where to start.

Yes, local council is the place to enquire.

I think there should be information regarding this in the local council website. I think she would qualify but the rules are complicated. I suggest you have a look at the council website, apply anyway and see what happens. I do know that where we are if you qualify for school meals you also qualify for free school bus pass which may help her too.

Sadly, if she gets working tax credits then she doesn’t qualify. The only exception is when you’ve just lost your job and you’re receiving the tax credit 4 week run on.
