i kept forgetting to pay my credit card on time so i set up a direct debit. however, it never got used as i cleared the card and had only used it for tiny amounts since, paying it right off every month, i had actually forgotten it was set up.

so anyway, last month i was a bit short on money and paid just some of it off instead. when i called up a few days later to check the balance it was in credit if you know what i mean! so i asked why and was told that a direct debit had gone out as well as my payment. the man i spoke to then said that they could put the money back into my account and cancel the direct debit. then he cut me off.

so i phoned back up and spoke to someone else explaining i'd just been cut off and when she checked she said it had been dealt with and the money was going back in. great thinks i.

so i get my statement this month and they have charged me £12.00 to put the direct debit back in! should they not have TOLD me there would be a charge? id have said leave it. neither of them said anything about a charge. should i have known this?

If it's in your T & Cs then they'll assume that should have known. It might be worth ringing them to explain no one said that they'd be a charge and can they waive it on this occasion? It might be possible to claim the charge back as in bank charges.... but someone else will probably come along later who knows more.
