Applying for new bank account with bad credit

I have a credit score which is excellent but a past history of bad credit. No defaults on account.
I have just been approved for a large mortgage with Santander but when I go to look at credit cards Experian says that my chances for approval are 30% or less.
We applied for a new bank account today and I am so worried about being rejected. Does anybody have any advice/ experience of this?

recommend starling bank - app based bank don’t do credit checks unless your after an overdraft.

If Santander have approved you for a mortgage I think they'd give you a bank account.

You will get a current account with Santander if they have approved you for a mortgage. Their lending criteria is strict when it comes to credit history.

We applied for our mortgage through a broker and not showing up on our record yet.

If no overdraft required Santander have a very basic account you'd be bound to get. Do that, upgrade later, then apply for a cc with them too.

It doesn't matter if you applied through a broker, the lending criteria is the same. Honestly, they will approve you for a bank account, even if the mortgage isn't showing yet. Your Experian "score' is irrelevant.

Can you check if Santander have carried out a credit check for the mortgage?
Just be careful as you can get an agreement in principle which is based on a soft search and then they do a full search when they do the formal offer.
Maybe your broker can advise. If you've got a full offer I don't see why they wouldn't give you a bank account.

So our joint account was approved but we were declined for an overdraft.
Our mortgage is approved and we have exchanged but now I am worried that we may have our mortgage offer rejected.

You won't, don't worry!

Mortgages are actually lower risk than overdrafts. Think about it - if you default on a mortgage they can take the house - overdrafts have no such security.

babybrainy · 19/09/2018 17:46

If it's a full offer and not an agreement in principle then I can't see them rejecting the mortgage now.

Your broker should be able to give you some comfort.
