Universal Credit

Hi.

I currently get Tax Credits and the disability element as DS1 gets DLA.

He turns 16 next year and is currently in y11.

My understanding is that l have to inform TC that he will continue in education post 16 in order to continue getting benefits for him.

His DLA however will be stopping as I'll have to apply for PIP which l don't hold out any hope of securing for him.

Does any of this mean that TC will convert me to Universal Credits ?

Many thanks

no neither of these are triggers for switching to UC. if you get carers allowance and your son is not awarded PIP and you then need to make a new claim for JSA or something then that would trigger a switch.

Yes you need to update tax credits but it won't trigger a switch to UC. That would only happen if you made a new claim for one of the six means tested benefits that UC replaces.

Slight hijack (am in same position OP), I am in receipt of IS and tax credits for my youngest, whilst also being a carer for my eldest. My own PiP is due for renewal at the end of this year. Am I correct in thinking that, from the replies above, that if my PiP doesn't get renewed then as I can stay on IS as a cadet, it won't trigger a move to UC?

*stay on IS as a carer!

Babyroobs · 12/09/2018 10:19

Yes you could stay on your current benefits as a carer for now. Everyone will be switched to Uc at some point, but you would be ok to stay as you are for now even if your PIP doesn't get renewed.

Many thanks everyone. I don't get carers as l work as minimal hours as l can in order to survive and be at home for ds1.
