Tax credits overpayment

Hi just wondering if anyone can advise. I am newly separated and having to relocate and move back with relatives short term as I have to leave the house. I have therefore had to quit my job and now looking for a new one in new location.

Today I have just received a letter from tax credits saying a owe them for some overpayment. I can't pay this back right now as I no longer have a job. I was also going to start a new claim for child tax credits as I am now a single parent. Does anyone know, will I no longer be able to do this due to the overpayment they say I owe them?

You should be able to still open a single claim as long as you make arrangements with them to pay back your arrears.

I'm sure they can't take it directly out of your new claim because it's 2 separate issues so you have to set up a direct debit with them.

Ok great thank you. I will call them tomorrow, was too late tonight and lines were closed. If it is done separately though that's a relief, I was worried I wouldn't be able to make a new claim.
