Still Have a Student Account, Not Exactly a Student...

Hello,

First time poster here!

When I went to University in 2011 I opened a student account with Halifax as they had a free overdraft. I Graduated in 2014 and went into the bank and told them I graduated but they didn't change my account. Four years later I still have my student account with no charge overdraft. No where on my account does it say i'm a student and it has my employment details there so I am listed as employed.

Now the account is still great for me because I have my overdraft if I run out of money at the end of the month and my savings and credit card are all attached. But I've started to worry a little about this, if/when they realise I am not a student and still have a student account can the bank fine me in anyway? Or will they just revert my account to a standard one without the overdraft?

Thanks in advance!

Have you actually used the OD to confirm you've not been charged as I had student account well after graduating but if went on OD it charged me

No, they won't do anything.
They may offer you a different account eventually but you won't get in any trouble. I know people that have had their student account for many years.

I am assuming you had written notice of their intent to charge you?

If not they were breaking the law and you should have phoned up and got your fees back.

It will depend on the policy of Halifax at the time. They might change it to another type of account or they might just close the account.

Thanks all! I've used the OD several times in the last few years, emergency holidays have been needed, free overdraft has been helpful...

I've heard nothing from the bank about them changing anything yet, keep expecting a letter from them. I just had a worry that they would tell me off or fine me for still having a student account and not being a student

But knowing people that also kept their student account does make me feel better! I try not to really use the overdraft anyway so when they do take it away hopefully it wont cause me turmoil!
