If I have a foreign death certificate for a death abroad ( non EU ) that is translated into English, do I need to register the death in the UK too? or is the foriegn certificate all I need to start the probate process etc?

You cannot register a death abroad in the UK, registration happens in the country where the death occurred.

Thank you - I guess what I really need to know is, is a foreign death certificate accepted here in the UK for probate etc . The certificate gives time and place of death but it doesn't give a cause of death. Would there be anything else I need to do/obtain?

Call the GRO on 0300 123 1837 and ask their advice as they look after all registrations issues.
