Remortgage advice please

Is it possible to obtain a mortgage on a property if it isn't in your name?

DH, myself and our 2DC live in the house I brought when single. We've never put DH on the deeds as didn't see the point in spending out to do so when we're now married and presume everything would be halved if we ever split. We were lucky enough to come into some money a few years back and paid off the mortgage with it. Just as well as DH hit employment problems just as we had DC1 and his income halved. We had to rely on credit cards when he was out of work and now find ourselves with over £10k debts. We're sinking under the repayment costs but don't want to tarnish our good credit ratings by going to the lenders and saying we're in trouble. The best way we can think of to get out of this mess is to remortgage to pay off the debt. Is it possible for DH and I to remortgage if only my name is on the deeds?
I am not in work, DH has lived in the property for 14years.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Don’t remortgage and turn unsecured debt into secured debt. Please have a look at the debt free wannabe section of MoneySavingExpert.com

No, you would not be able to remortgage as the house is in your name and you have no income.
Whose name are the credit cards in? There are lots of ways to consolidate debt, as the last poster said, check out Martin Lewis moneysavingexpert site. This link takes you directly to his debt advice.

Thank you for your advice.

Most of the debt is in my name.

Why would it not be a good idea to remortgage for debt purposes? Is it just because we could potentially lose the house if we couldn't repay?
