How long to credit card company have to take payment?

I made a large (for me) payment by credit card about two weeks ago. For the first week it showed as a pending transaction and my available credit decreased by a corresponding amount.

About a week ago, the pending transaction disappeared without the 'real' transaction appearing on my card. My available credit shot back up as well.

What has happened here? Will the transaction just reappear in the future, and how long could this take?

What was the payment for?

Holiday balance!

Have you checked that the holiday balance has definitely been paid and that the payment was not reversed?

I haven't phoned to check but my online account with travel agent says I've paid.

What should I do next? Phone bank? Phone travel agent?

Can't help but wonder how it happens though? If it had been an every day spend I would never have noticed it had vanished!!

So I called the credit card company who were pretty useless. They apparently can't see any previous pending transaction.

Crazy that I have to follow this up, for the benefit of whichever corporate organisation have screwed up.
