My DD has a 12 month industrial placement the other side of the country which is, amazingly, 30 mins drive from my sister’s house. Sister has offered to put her up but has refused any rent. DD wants to pay rent (and I think she should).

Any suggestions as to how much?

It depends on what she is earning.
On a decent wage, is very different from 'receiving expenses'.

£16.5k

Also - my sister is significantly less well-off than we are. I appreciate that it should be a transaction between DD & DSis but I don’t want DSis to be out of pocket.

She should definitely pay 'keep' if she's being fed and towards the bills. As yours sister is saying she doesn't want any money I'd just look at covering this.

Would your sister accept help around the house? Help with the kids? In lieu of money?

Thanks. I think I’ll suggest she offers £50pw & they can negotiate from there.
