Hello All,

Just a quick question before i go into detail if necessary. At the moment both my partner and i are on JSA(joint claim) after being made redundant 9 months ago but she has had to visit her sick mother in Malta. Her sister told her to come over as the doctors have told her that the mothers condition is worsening and to be prepared for the worst. When my friend came round the other day and asked where my wife was i told him and he said i could be in trouble for not telling the dwp that my wife had gone away. I told him that not only did everything happen so quickly that the last thing on my mind was the dwp but as I was the one that had to go in and sign on, attend courses, go to the job centre and do job searches etc etc that it was me who could not go away which is why i stayed behind. He told me that this was not the case and if they found out i would end up paying back hundreds of pounds. Is this right?

How come your wife doesn't have to jointly sign on too??

If your dw is part of your claim and unavailable to look for work you should be telling jc. There may be no immediate sanction but a prolonged absence may affect your claim.

Not really sure about that but i didnt questioned it. If they only need me to sign on then thats fine.

If only you do, then they won't question why she isn't there when you go.

I wouldn't say anything if it was me
