I thought I would make people aware of this change.
Apologies if there is another thread (I haven’t seen it if there is)
There is a deadline to apply and not many people have that’s why I have posted.

Anyone who is claiming this benefit should already have been notified that it is changing from a benefit to a loan. Letters have been going out for a while now but apparently the vast majority of recipients are choosing not to take the loan offer.

Ah I see I didn’t know most people chose not too, I thought if people relied on it they wouldn’t have the money to pay the difference.

But odd to get a benefit to pay the mortgage in the first place

I guess people in financial trouble can get help with their rent payments so this is the same for homeowners.

The benefit only goes towards the interest, not the capital

I think the problem is that it was intended to be short term help for example when people get ill, but then people have needed up sitting on this benefit for years and in that time house prices have risen dramatically so the claimants have benefited from having their mortgage interest paid. Now the government feel they can no longer pay this when so many people have profited so they have taken it away/ made it into a loan to be paid back. It is very hard for people who have no choice though who never get better from illness or who have to leave their jobs to care for someone.
