895 unit difference on Gas meter?!

Hi there

am panicing slighly, I am sorting out my utilities. I live in a studio flat, on my own until last year when my oh moved in,with gas central heating, hot water and oven.

I admit that normally I am slack reading the meter. The last time I gave a reading was sept 2016 , and last year in August a meter reader came round.

Anyway I've looked today and the meter says 2172, and on my bill it says 1277, a difference of 895! there is no way I could of used that many units!

I am looking at a bill of what 28,000? there must be some mistake.

What can I do about this?

Are you sure they are both stating units? Maybe the meter reading is in units but it is showing in kWh on your bill?

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 30/01/2018 12:41

What does last years bill have for the reading?

GoodMorning1 · 30/01/2018 12:44

The gas meter will measure what you've used in either cubic metres of cubic feet. The bill will translate that into kWh. How much does the bill say you owe?

Belle1616 · 30/01/2018 12:44

the estimated reading for my last bill is 1277, the meter says 2172... thats a big difference

Sorry I meant the one from a year ago. Have you got an old bill?

Belle1616 · 30/01/2018 13:29

I’ve just checked online, and as far as I can tell all my bills have been estimated.. does that mean the meter Reader didn’t record the reading?

Can you compare the actual meter reading now to the one you took last year

It's likely to just be a mistake somewhere?

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/01/2018 15:19

If your previous bills were estimated you will owe the amount on your meter .

Akire · 30/01/2018 15:23

You still can’t have used that much gas in a year. I’m suprised they let you go that long mine email me or send someone to read it least twice a year. To stop this kind of big gap.

If real was the correct reading last time how much per month and they saying you have used?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 30/01/2018 15:23

Gas doesnt work like that. Look at small print of your bill, there will be a bit that says units used x 3.6 or somethink like that

See middle section of attached pic for my gas company

I don’t know if that helps but 895 would work out at about £350 on my bill, depending on your company standing charge etc I’ve just submitted my readings for the month and used and average from my bill to work it out with the 895.

SloanePeterson · 30/01/2018 15:39

Could they have read it wrong? I had a water bill a few years ago that was three times the usual amount, and they sent someone round to check for a leak. The first hint the guy asked was to see the meter reading on the bill, apparently it happened a lot and was always the first thing he checked for.

delilahbucket · 01/02/2018 18:55

I don't know how you calculate a bill of £28k OP. 895 gas units is about £400 depending on your tariff plus any standing charges. If you've only had estimated bills this is of no surprise and is likely to be right.

MongerTruffle · 01/02/2018 18:57

895 m3 isn't £28000.
