Emergency tax code, do I get automatic refund?

Taking p45 from old job in tomorrow so should be sorted for next payday but have paid about £250 more tax this month than I should have done.

Do I need to claim this back somehow?

It should get corrected via your pay once you’ve got the correct tax code, but worth keeping an eye on it to check.

Thanks, will do.

I use the hmrc website and call the tax office directly. They then send a notice with the right code tp your employer.
Not all employers act on your p45 as quickly as they should.
Dont let it go another month.

It should all be done automatically through your payroll. BUT apparently sometimes HMRC issue P45s with tax codes that would mean you wouldn't get a refund until the end of tax year (so they get to keep the money longer.) Usually if you have changed jobs several times. So may be worth handing P45 in and then contacting your payroll dept to speak to them to make sure they look at it before they do next month's payroll, so they can sort it if needed before then. (Just asked DH who works in tax/payroll and thats what he told me.)

Thanks. Will keep an eye on it and see if the extra tax is refunded next month. If not will ring them up.

It isn’t refunded automatically IME, you need to call the tax office.

Get it sorted by March pay or you will have to wait for refund from Hmrc directly which could take anywhere from a week or so to a million years a couple of months ime!

Currently sat outside payroll with p45 waiting for them to open.
