*ANYONE WHO HAS CHANGED MORTGAGE LENDERS IN THE LAST 6 YEARS MUST READ THIS*

If you have changed mortgage lenders in the last 6 years you would have been charged an exit fee.

This should have been £50 but many banks/building societies charged up to £300. This has now been officially declared out of order and a phone call to your previous dealer will give you back anything you paid over the £50 plus interest.

It was that Martin money man on GMTV this morning who said all this and would you believe, one phone call to the Woolwich and I'm £100 + better off.

No iffs, no butts (like reclaiming bank charges), they just have to give it to you.

Tell everyone - I'm all for the small guy getting justice over the big ones!

Our cheque for £150 from Standard Life arrived on Saturday.

Am about to call Abbey as well, from the mortgage before that.

I'm about to move house and IF have toldme that they will charge me £180 to discharge me mortgage - surely this is out of line with the FSA guideline of £50?

Can I ask them to reduce it to £50 do you think?

moo · 09/07/2007 11:04

Just dug out our paperwork for when we moved mortgages from the Chelsea in 2003 - terms and conditions say the redemption fee is £50 and they charged us...£50.

Nice to know they're honest but I could have done with a little £300 windfall this month

Hello I just had a lovely cheque for £100 from the Alliance and Leicester, jsut for a phone call and the price of a stamp.

Im also anticipating similar form the Coventry Building Soc. although they were a bit cagier about it onthe phone.

Thanks to this thread for drawing my attenttion to it. The instructions on teh moneysaving expert website are really good.

We've just had a phone call from RBS saying they're going to refund me £150 PLUS it jogged my memory that I found a charge for £395 when I was going through the old mortgage statements which I couldn't explain. Turns out they added the charge for a new mortgage that we never took out PLUS I asked them for 8% interest on it for the period since they applied it and they AGREED. So a couple of phone calls and a letter means we're £600 better off! Wahoo! Although I'm being boring and sensible and just re-paying that portion of the mortgage

Has anyone got anything back from Northern Rock yet?? We sent our letter last week and are hoping for £200 back.

jellyjelly · 10/07/2007 18:06

How do you know that you have been charged an exit fee?

When you remortgage you get a final statement from the outgoing mortgage lender, which should break down all the costs involved -- the amount of money you need to pay off, any interest incurred, and any fee applied. Then you phone them up, say, "I'm looking at my mortgage statement and it says I was charged £xyz, and I want to reclaim that."

If you can't find the paperwork, you could just phone and ask them how much you were charged, but you're in a better position if you've got chapter and verse in front of you.

louloulouise · 11/07/2007 20:38

We got a letter from Northern Rock offering not the £200 we requested but £75 - anyone else had this?? Have you accepted or are you pursuing the full amount??

lovelymoo · 14/07/2007 10:11

Just looking at this thread we are changing lenders at the moment due to complete on monday. They have charged us a £225 admin for moving our mortgage is that right or should it be less.
Not to good with all this legal jargon
Thanks

Thankyou so much for this thread - I rang Woolwich today and we are having £112 refunded. Great news.

I got £190 back from C&G most helpful ont he phone, very helpful.

Judy1234 · 20/07/2007 11:26

6 years is how long legally you can go back and claim things.
If you were told a charge was X and they charged you x there is no claim, I believe because you were not misled.

Nip · 28/08/2007 09:44

Just thought i'd put my bit in here, and say that i contacted my old mortgage lender and got back £30... i know its not a huge amount, but its made my day!

If you haven't done it yet.. do it!!!
