*ANYONE WHO HAS CHANGED MORTGAGE LENDERS IN THE LAST 6 YEARS MUST READ THIS*

If you have changed mortgage lenders in the last 6 years you would have been charged an exit fee.

This should have been £50 but many banks/building societies charged up to £300. This has now been officially declared out of order and a phone call to your previous dealer will give you back anything you paid over the £50 plus interest.

It was that Martin money man on GMTV this morning who said all this and would you believe, one phone call to the Woolwich and I'm £100 + better off.

No iffs, no butts (like reclaiming bank charges), they just have to give it to you.

Tell everyone - I'm all for the small guy getting justice over the big ones!

Here is the freefone number for all Barclays and Woolwich mortgages 0800 023 4180. This number has been set up for the exit fee refunds ONLY.

However, if you paid £195 as your exit fee they are not going to refund as I was told 'the £50 is only an advisory amount and we are not prepared to refund until it becomes compulsory!'

If anyone does have any luck with this lender then please let me know.

For any Nationwide customers - just had my £90 refunded. Had to write in and phone them to remind them but didn't query it.

JustBonnie · 24/05/2007 12:05

I had to pay over 2k to redeem my nationwide 5 yr fixed mortgage last year. Needed to move house but they wouldn't do the self cert mortgage we needed as our situation had changed and hubby was self employed. Would we be able to get any of this back?

Racers · 24/05/2007 12:12

We also got our cheque this morning (Halifax £100) following a phone call about a week ago. Great stuff!

barbamama · 24/05/2007 14:24

No that sounds like a redemption charge - we had to pay that too - that is when you redeem the mortgage early and is legitimate apparently. What we are talking about is the administration charge / exit fee that they charge you to redeem the mortgage irrespective of whether or not it is early - normally £100 or so. You were probably charged this admin fee as well as the early redemption charge so you should be able to claim that back. I asked them to send me a mortgage statement showing all costs associated with redeeming the mortgage and it is listed as Redemtion Expense £90 which I got back using the letter from the website on this thread and Early Repayment Charge £1000's which you can't get back.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be phoning Birmingham Midshires and Cornhill tomorrow, wish me luck! can't wait

DelGirl · 31/05/2007 12:25

I misread it and thought they couldn't charge them at all There was me thinking i'll get back hundreds (3 companies) Have ended up with £35, but thank you that's better than a kick in the teeth! 1 won't refund and the other I need to write in but I think I probably won't get anything from them as it was 'only' £90 anyway.

ZipadiSuzy · 06/06/2007 23:31

Thanks, £100 on its way to us from Birmingham Midshires, now just got to try Cornhill!

Twinklemegan · 06/06/2007 23:40
