Tax Return bloody text boxes

SparkleFizz · 08/01/2018 22:25

Trying to do my tax return.

One of the automatically calculated numbers is wrong (we owe them more), I have amended it.

Next box says “tell us why this figure is different”.
So I type a brief, under 250 characters explanation, along with numbers and reference codes.

But the damn thing won’t save! Keeps giving me an error message about how I can only use alpha numerics and particular special symbols. I’ve only used numbers, letters, spaces, and the following symbols £ , . / ( ) , all of which are permitted according to the error message.

It’s driving me nuts. I can’t figure out why I can’t save it.

Any ideas please?!

Copy the text out of the text box, paste it into notepad (will remove any weird formatting if there is any) and then copy and paste it back.

It's worked on other forms, not tried it on HMRC

I had this last year. I'd used a hyphen (heaven forfend us).

It’s the £ Confused Confused

[bangs head against wall]

It’s accepted £ in other text boxes ON THE SAME FORM Angry

Ok. What’s a short way of writing £ in letters?

GBP.

KatyMac · 08/01/2018 22:41

Or a return to make it into paragraphs - HMRC really don't like paragraphs

SparkleFizz · 08/01/2018 22:43

Thanks moggle

I had an unsubmittable return a few years ago because I typed too much in a free text box. It didn’t give me the limit for the box, stop me from typing when I reached the limit, or tell me why I couldn’t submit it. Took me ages trying to figure that out grr.

It’s frustrating isn’t it?

I was copying and pasting the text into Word to try and figure out how many characters I needed to get rid of.

I hate the buggers - I appear to be the only one in my family who can do them

So mine, my dads (before her died) now my mums, and it looks like DD will need one next April & several friends just need 'a bit of help' Hmm

They aren't hard, exactly, just a pain

This one is fairly straightforward, although I still need to go back through and double check the form.

But it’s so so frustrating when you get vague error messages like that one!
