Card declined in shop???

Hi, any advice. I visited the shop earlier and spent £57, I put my card in to pay but it declined. I knew I had more than enough funds in so we tried again and it went through. When I’ve checked my balance , £114 has left my account, so the payment was taken twice? I bank with HSBC and the shop was Co-op. Has this happened to anyone before? Will it drop back into my account or will I have to chase this up? TIA

Sounds as though the payment went through twice. The retailer should have given you the receipt saying the payment was declined which you can send to the bank. Probably best to call them now.

Did they give you a receipt to show it was declined? When a transaction fails they usually get a receipt to prove it which they give to the customer - might be worth taking to your bank

It might not have gone through twice. Check with your bank.

TfL “reserve” the money, even if your card is declined. You then have to wait for the money to go back in. I found out to my detriment when trying to buy my expensive monthly travel card, but I had forgotten to change my billing address.

Check your bank account online in the morning.

If there is a problem, contact your bank.

No a receipt didn’t come out of the machine when it first declined. The worst thing is that when I went back into the shop to tell her I had my bank card in my hand hoping she could stick the refund on and she said nope that I had to ring a number and from leaving the shop to getting home I have now lost my bank card! What a day! Looks like I’ve lost the money to the shop then

No it doesn't.

Sometimes these things self-rectify overnight with the banking system.

As I said earlier on, check online in the morning and take it from there.

Wait a couple of days, check online banking, if still showing as two transactions send HSBC a message to request that that the duplicate entry is put in to dispute.

Two amounts, same card terminal, within minutes of each other, should be fairly obvious is a duplicate charge.

Happened to my MIL and the explanation was along the lines of the money was "reserved" for the transaction but hadn't actually been taken, even though that is how it appeared. It caused her trouble as she lives on a tight budget and she needed the money. It did go back in on its own though.

No no no no no. Do NOT let this slide. The only reason you wouldn't get this money back is if you didn't put in enough effort to get it back.

This happened to me in Brantano., I even had the declined receipt. I went in and they were a real pain in the bum but got money back eventually.. I had to point out that obviously it was their mistake as why would two identical transactions appear, especially as one had been supposedly declined 😫

The money probably went back into the OP's account automatically and that is why she didn't need to come back to this thread.
