It would be handy for me to use a cheque tomorrow but my cheque book is dated 2011 and I have changed my name (got married) since it was issued. There won't be any problems will there? It's for a school photo, I'm concerned that if it's not valid I will miss out on the school photo.

Depends on the bank. Some keep a copy of your signature and if it doesn't match then the payment won't go through. Won't the photo company take a card payment? Tempest do.
