Sending money to New Zealand

DS heading off to NZ for a year or 2. He has savings which he will need access to on and off while he is there. Any suggestions as to cheapest way of doing it? Should he move it all at once or as needed? Could he put it on a currency card, for example?
Thanks!

He can access his British bank account while he is there, he just tells the bank where he will be. Online banking is of course a very good idea. Having all his money on one currency card sounds chancy.

been a while, but there used to be a tie up between Barclays and Westpac which reduced the fees (there WILL be fees). Worth a check?

also worth a few travellers cheques - MN scoffs but they are the standby in case of everything nicked. Get them in Aussie dollars.

and of course working holiday travel insurance, not the standard kind.

Thanks - he is sorted for proper travel insurance! He can access his bank account from here - just doesn't want to pay a commission every time.

Part of the working holiday thing can be to open a local account. He may be able to reduce some fees, but it always costs to move money between currencies. That's life.
