No rent or mortgage, but have to pay for other bills of course - council tax, electricity, and so on. Here is my list.

Council tax.
Electricity
Phone
Internet
Car insurance
Home insurance
Groceries
Clothes
Shoes
Cleaning products
Pet food
Petrol

Have I missed anything? What would you say the above should come to?

Gas? I guess it really depends on other factors such as size of house, how much your council tax is, if you have plenty of clothes /shoes, how many people you're feeding, any regular prescriptions or medication. Why do you ask?

Akire · 31/08/2017 18:07

Gas? Water? Presents /holidays?

Prescription costs?

tshirtsuntan · 31/08/2017 18:09

Debt repayments? Credit card?

LineysRun · 31/08/2017 18:10

I'd have to add gas, water, sewage. Plus DC's costs.

Eryri1981 · 31/08/2017 18:13

Comfortably off about £150.
Live with DH & Dog, includes running a car and one self catered European holiday a year plus UK camping and UK long weekend each year.

softshells · 31/08/2017 18:16

No debt repayments, but you're right about water, hair cuts and so on.

Are holidays an essential? Nice to have but you can live without them can't you?

Vet bills

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 31/08/2017 18:23

Car tax
Pet insurance

softshells · 31/08/2017 18:26

Again, that's not really an essential ... I just don't think I could afford that.

Car tax, mot, service

Copperbeech33 · 31/08/2017 18:31

is the car essential?

softshells · 31/08/2017 18:33

Definitely. Live rurally.

For all of those bills +tv license but - car insurance, I pay about £600 a month. That covers groceries for 7 people.

My car insurance is about £1400 a year because I'm a new driver, so I didn't include that for a fairer comparison.

I have more bills than that that are 'extras' but the £600 is the minimum we need to live on excluding rent.

That obviously doesn't cover regular savings for things like birthdays, Christmas and holidays. It also doesn't cover things like car tax, Mot, servicing, white goods, kids clubs, dinner money etc. Things that while not essential would make life pretty rough.
