thanks TR

thing is my kids are in school now, so does that mean I can actively seek work?

the wording isn't too specific!

ssd - when you fill the forms in they ask when you are available for work. It depends on what you put down - it you narrow your options (by saying just school hours for example) too much they may say that you aren't 'available for work'. You need to call and make an appointment with them.

I am claiming it atm. I have 2 pre-school children so that doesn't make any difference. I am currently looking for part time work but they said I had to look for full time after 13 weeks and then after 26 weeks they up the ante even more and start pushing you into going for interviews. You may be able to start your claim online using the link that TrinityRhino has given, but you still have to go in and give them your life story.

surely every SAHM would get it then?

Well you obviously have to be looking for work to be able to claim but you can do this regardless of whether you have children or not. There are 2 types of jsa - contribution based, which is based on how much NI contributions you have paid, or income based, which is for low income families I think.

SAHMs tend to get income support SSD.
