Tax credits...again

Hi, just a quick question regarding tax credits. So, last year we received £300 in tax credits. My husband then had a promotion and a pay rise. I told Tax Credits immediately as I knew this rise would take us over and we should no longer receive any tax credits. The payments were stopped as I expected and that's fine. So we received the renewal letter in June, it stated that we owed £300 (which I expected and fully intend to repay). It said a confirmation letter would be sent in July with instructions how to pay etc. It's now the middle of August and I haven't received a letter? I have read stories about HMRC changing tax codes and just taking the money from wages? Can they do this? I will call tomorrow but just wondered if anyone has experience of this?
