What time do banks (Natwest) update?

I paid a cheque in that I thought would clear today. Do their systems update at a certain time in the morning or would it be done by now?

Don't know about cheques but I know one weekend they took all my debit card purchases out twice (leaving me with no money) and when I rang to complain that I couldn't access my own money they said that was how their systems work and it would correct itself at 3am. So guessing it updates at 3am. (I changed banks fairly soon after tho!)
