I got a letter from lowell saying they had brought my catalogue debt. However the amount they said I owed is different from what my debtor says.

I was on reduced payments for the last 6 months as we are having serious money problems right now. I went on to my account and it's still active my next payment is due but don't know whether I should pay it or not? I can't phone them just now in myself with the dcs no where to go for privacy.

And don't want to phone lowell as I believe that can make things worse?

Any advice would be appreciated

If you are on Facebook there's a group called beat the banks and bailiffs. They have a letter process that gets the debt passed to the original company.
The reason why the amounts differ is because Lowell add their fees.
If they show up on your door you do not have to engage with them. You do not have to let them into your home. They will tell you that you have to let them in. They will tell you they can break in. Unless they take you to court and the judge okays it, they cannot do this.
Start your paper trail and email the original company, asking them what is going on that they had an agreement with you to pay x and month which you have been doing.

Thanks that's helpful. The things is though the amount lowell have on the letter is lower. Not significantly that it would be a reduced offer its just a random wrong number. Also I'm in Scotland I don't believe we have bailiffs? Could I be wrong? I mean hoping it's a mistake as the reduced payments would be affecting my credit rating and now this I'll never recover. My plan of buying my own home in 2018 are now officially out the window !! Sad

Ah sorry I assumed you were in England. Hopefully you can get specific advice from The group about Scotland or from here.

It's for quite a large amount so I really don't want it to go any further and get to court. I've emailed the catalogue but haven't heard from them yet hopefully they will reply soon. I've had 2 voicemails and a text message from lowell. The voicemails are an automated message but they call me by name.

I'm in Scotland and have an account with Lowell. Please talk to them, they are so helpful. They've put my account on hold for 40 days until after the Xmas period. They will be able to tell you everything. Try not to worry.
