My ds has his dad's surmane but his dad hasn't been involved in any part of his life for a year now. he doesn't see him at all.

i want ds to have my surname but apparently it cant be changed without his dad's permission.

Ive just found new info on lone parents website saying the name can be changed if it is a spelling mistake and there is no time limit to when this can be changed

There is only one letter difference between me and ds's surname. Do you think i could claim it is a spelling mistake and ask for it to be changed? Its the last letter in a 4 letter word

It might work. Is his dad on the certificate?

It's very long winded to get it changed for a spelling mistake though juicy. You can do it but IIRC the registrar has to get permission from the General Registry Office and the birth certificate would have a crossing out/correction and a marginal note. You wouldn't get a new certificate.

Hope this helps.
