Bereavement payment rules

A friends partner has just passed away. How do the rules on the £2000 bereavement payment work As he was still married yet going through process of divorce via solicitors. He lived with his new partner for 5 years and had nothing to do with the soon to be ex wife. Seems disgusting she can benefit from his death when his partner would use the money to pay for funeral.

If he was legally still married, then his wife is his next of kin, I don't know if there's much your friend can do about it
