My mind is so muddled at the moment, trying to figure out a rough estimate of how much I would need to buy out DH if we divorce.

The property is worth about 400,000.

Purchased for £250,000 with equal deposit.

£168,000 left of mortgage.

I've paid it all basically as he is 'self-employed' and hardly works.

If we split I would like to buy him out, but could only bring my borrowing up to £215,000.

Many thanks x

Well as a starting point I would imagine that he should get half of the equity - £116,000.

You would then need to negotiate from there if you don't think that is fair due to you paying it all.

yes, if we sold up and shared the equity, I get that and am fine with that, but trying to work out if I can buy him out? Does that mean I would need to borrow the remaking £400,000 (-£116,000) = £284,000?

Yes, £168,000 you still owe plus the extra £116,000 to buy your ex out = £284,000 total borrowing.

I thought so. I can only borrow a max of £215,000, so can't afford to buy him out. Which is gutting. Thanks for clarifying for me X
