POLL - What council tax band are you in? (especially those in a terrace!)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 12:50

Hi,

I am doing a poll about council tax bands.

I live in a new build 2 up 2 down terrace with no garden.

My band is B.

Gosh I don't think anyone here is B. I've never seen that before

we are F (end terrace)

BadHair · 24/01/2007 12:57

We're band B - 3 bed mid-terrace with large-ish rear garden and small garden to front.

ItsMeMellowma · 24/01/2007 12:58

Band B. Its rubbish

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 12:58

Maybe bands are different across the country, I don't know!
Band A is the cheapest band in East Anglia.
Reason I ask is that I am in a dispute with valuation office.
Our house has no outside space and no fences. The back door leads out to the street.
I feel we pay too much council tax! My friend is band B and has a 3 bed house with garage and garden just a few streets away!

lucykate · 24/01/2007 13:02

isn't the banding based on the average house value in the whole street, rather than on an individual property

expatinscotland · 24/01/2007 13:03

band c.

2nd floor flat. 2 bed. no outdoor space at all.

foxinsocks · 24/01/2007 13:03

we're in a 2 up 2 down terrace - v old and we are band E ggrrrrr (how we are band E, I will never know)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:06

Expat - band c!!!!!!!

Have phoned valuation office today and they say it is defo band b.
I put my foot down and said I didn't agree. We have victorian terraces not far way who are band A and at least they have a back yard!
I said to valuation officer - if this house was a victorian terrace I would pay less wouldn't I? He agreed!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:07

Do the bands differ throughout the country then? I mean blimey band E for a terrace?!

I feel lucky now.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 24/01/2007 13:07

I would love to be band b!

we have a yard out back but it's only about 18/20 foot by 12 foot so wouldn't even qualify for being called a garden!

Ladymuck · 24/01/2007 13:08

What band are your neighbours in? It shouldn't apply to the whole street but should take account of differences between properties.

saltireneepsandtatties · 24/01/2007 13:10

I don't know what badn the house i live in is graded at, as it's a married quarter. However, our house in the south of scotland is a Victorian terrace, upper house (go in front door and upstairs to get to rooms). It has 2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom, small boxroom and garden round the back. Its a band A, don't know how much Council tax the tenant pays a month though

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:11

Neighbours are also band B. I have always thought this was too much.

Houses opposite me are band c, they are 3 storey with garage and postage stamp size gardens. The houses next to them are 3 storeys with no garden, no garage, but are still band c!!

God I hate council tax..

ComeOVeneer · 24/01/2007 13:15

We are Band G. It is an end of terrace, with a fairly small garden, but it is on 4 floors.

CountessDracula · 24/01/2007 13:16

no idea but it costs £2k a year
what is that band?

zippitippitoes · 24/01/2007 13:18

is there much difference between b and a?

here if we were b it would 980.00 and as f it is 1900

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:18

usefullink on council tax savings

OP posts:
lucykate · 24/01/2007 13:19

there must be huge differences countrywide then after reading this, we're in band d (but all the bands are expensive here, council have a marble fronted office building to maintain ), its a 5 bed detatched, large outside space as its a corner plot. how on earth is it all worked out?

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:20

Band B - we pay £1053 a year.

When we had a 3 bed maisonette we were band A. It was much larger property and had a 20ft balcony.

Not sure how much of a saving it would be, but it is becoming a principal thing for me now lol!

OP posts:
mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 13:21

Countessdracula, I am not sure, maybe a c or d?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 24/01/2007 13:23

we really are band E (really, ours is a normal 2 up 2 down, it's only 12 foot wide -room size- the whole house!) which was £1800 for last year.

If you're £2k Cd, you're either F (£2050) or G (£2300)

titchy · 24/01/2007 13:24

Aren't they based on property values? So a house in a dodgy part of the north east would be a much lower band that the exact same house in a posh area in the south east?

All you can do is compare the value of your property with others in the same area of a similar size.

If the Victorian houses near you which are band a are worth the same as yours then you may have grounds for appeal. But you can't compare with others in a different area as it's no longer based on size (unlke the old rates system I belive).

CountessDracula · 24/01/2007 13:25

oh I don't know it is by direct debit

It's a 4 bed edwardian terrace about 1800 sq ft

titchy · 24/01/2007 13:26

The amount each band pays varies widely from council to council - so £2000 a year maybe band b in some areas and band g in others.

We were a c band many years ago in a certain london borough and paid NO council tax for a year!

oliveoil · 24/01/2007 13:26

3 bed terrace

no idea on band, pay £94 a month dd
