POLL - What council tax band are you in? (especially those in a terrace!)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 24/01/2007 12:50

Hi,

I am doing a poll about council tax bands.

I live in a new build 2 up 2 down terrace with no garden.

My band is B.

Cloudhopper - I agree that a local income tax would not be entirely fair - I don't believe there is any system that would be fair to all. Disposable income is an interesting point really. There are choices to be made in how you choose to spend your income. There is a degree of control over the size of your mortgage for example. Childcare of course is very expensive - I know that's one of the reasons why I stayed at home to raise my children. Pensions in this country are at crisis point at the moment - and I don't just mean state pensions - the situation is only going to get worse by the time our generation is retired. No tax is popular - but some are fairer than others.

Mumfor1 - That is why my appeal was successful. The house had been valued from the front only and so therefore looked identical to the neighbouring properties but the fact it was on such a small plot meant it was cheaper than the neighbouring properties. I can't remember how I appealled but I think I might have phoned the council and they sent me some sort of form to complete.

'Council tax cash back' fri 26th 8pm on TV. Although you probably all know this, hense the question. Anyway, checked our band last night via moneysavingexpert.com and we are due money back for being in the wrong band. Have a look and good luck. its really easy to follow.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 25/01/2007 12:54

chopchopbusybusy - good news that your appeal was successful.
I can't see mine changing at all, I am not that lucky.
It just annoys me that when new deveolpments are built they don't seem to look at them!
When we moved in 3.5 yrs ago we were sent a council tax bill with no banding. We were told to pay £120 a month until it had been 'valued'. We only pay £105 now so this is madness in itself!

I'm not saying council tax is fair on everyone chopchopbusybusy. But I think that a move towards an income based system is even worse.

Mortgage costs or rent are not chosen, they are, by and large, dictated by the area you live in and the year in which you bought your property. If you bought in the last 3 or 4 years, you could have a tiny house for the same cost as a 5 bed detached four years earlier. This already disproportionately bites into your income, and an income based council tax would compound the misfortune you had to be born at the wrong time.

I'm not talking hypothetically - where we live we have a whopping mortgage for a tiny property in the cheapest area where we can both commute to jobs. Rent would be even more expensive.

Equally because of said mortgage neither of us can afford to stay at home to look after the children. My salary contributes a few hundred a month net, but it is necessary for that reason.

I really feel for pensioners and people on very low incomes, because they do not have the choice to increase their income and see it whittled away each year by council tax. In fact 80% of the wealth in this country is owned by the over 50s, but they have a very effective voice in protecting this.

I think a fairer way of approaching this issue would be to ensure that the increases given on pensions and the indexes they are linked to reflect the increase in the cost of living like council tax.

There are taxes levied on property values in virtually every country in the world. We are very lightly taxed on property in this country compared to elsewhere.

think it's the lib dems that were suggesting linking council tax to income

I think if that happened, I'd start booking my flight out of this country grrr.

Don't know the band but our Council Tax costs us £349 a MONTH (not a terraced house)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 25/01/2007 13:28

itsmeNDP - how much??

OP posts:
grouchyoscar · 25/01/2007 13:28

We moved into Casa del Grouchy just at the start of Council Tax. We fell into Band A (properties under 40K) It is a 3 bed 4 floor mid terrace house in West Yorkshire We paid 37K

As yet there has been no ammendment to the bandings, which is scary as next door sold fo 95K. When we moved mortgages our original lenders valued the property at 94.5K not taking into account any improvements or hikes in the house price market.

If they do revalue the bands, everyone's Banding will change accordingly won't it? Our house will still be band A as I doubt you can buy a garage for under 40K now

itsmeNDP · 25/01/2007 13:28

Honestly. I wish I was joking

mumfor1standfinaltime · 25/01/2007 13:28

or should I say howmuch??

mumfor1standfinaltime · 25/01/2007 13:31

Always thought London would be more than Norfolk (where i am).

itsmeNDP · 25/01/2007 13:31

Our old, smaller house was £15OO a year

hunkermunker · 25/01/2007 13:31
