Has anyone used a private dectective?

Sorry to hear that, must be very worrying not knowing what has become of him. Have no experience of using private detectives. How would you know whether they were seriously searching for him or just charging you for it? Would you consider going to the police and asking them for advice/recommendations about how to go about this, who to turn to?

Have no personal experience of this site, but wonder if they can help. There's a page where you can enter search criteria by country and it is free. Perhaps they can put you in touch with someone in the Netherlands who could help you further.
