Does anyone have any experience of getting out of a hire purchase contract early? Is it possible?

I have 2y left from a 5y contract but my car is just too small now.

Only on a lease agreement with a buy back clause but it was some years back. There must surely be some early termination provision in your agreement, though. What, broadly, does it say?

I did - in the small print it said I could terminate early once I was more than 50% of the way through the HP.

If you have paid more than 50% of the credit cost back you may be able to do a voluntary termination. I suggest checking your paperwork.
