Advice please - phone for 70 year old

Hello. Perhaps someone can give me some advice. A 70 year old I know (who is not too techie, but not a fool) needs a new phone and has just been turned down for a contract phone (not sure why - maybe no credit cards etc).
She does use the phone regularly for calls, and the odd text, and MAY be persuaded to take a few photos (but this is not essential). What phone would MN recommend, and should she PAYG?
Thanks

She'll have to PAYG if she can't get a contract.

My DM has a Doro - very simple and easy to use. Only works on the 2G signal though, so woulddn't work in areas where this is being switched off, or dominated by a 3G/4G signal.

as just been turned down for a contract phone

It would be worth pursuing why that is. The credit threshold required to get a contract phone is pretty low, and I'd be worried that someone had been up to no good with her details.

Ok, thanks for this - is it easy to find out where 2G and 3G are dominant?

The network providers websites will tell you, though they sometimes promise things they don't deliver!
EE sent my DM a signal booster box for her home as the signal wasn't that good where she is.
