Unexpected payment from ex employer.

Last month, I had a refund of my pension contributions through an ex employer as I'd only been in the scheme for a short period. Just a small sum after tax of about £250. I didn't ever receive a payslip for it but wasn't enormously concerned.

I've received the exact same amount this month, this time with a pay slip that specifically states it's a pension refund. So it appears to me that the first payment was a mistake, though it was money I expected.

I could really use the money. Both payments were subjected to an emergency tax code (I assume this for the first simply because both payments to me were identical) so nothing dodgy there. It's a huge household name company so the £250 really isn't a blip on their radar.

WWYD?

You need to pay it back. It is dishonest.

Hang on to it until they ask for it back - don't spend it but you may as well accrue interest.
