Concentrix - Complaint & Compensation.

CitizenX · 09/02/2015 13:31

Concentrix wrote to tell me they had "evidence" there may be a partner living with me. (There most definitely is not)
I rang them immediately. Their computer system was down. I asked what the evidence was and they said "Under the D.P.A. (Data Protection Act) we cannot tell you." I asked if I had any rights under the F.O.I. (Freedom of Information Act) to find out what this so-called "evidence" might be, so that I could refute it. They told me I did not.

They then said the only thing I could do was send them original copies of Bank Statements, Benefits, Mortgage or Rental Agreements, Household bills, Legal docs pertaining to my marital status, Council Bills from April 2014 to Jan 2015. I said I was not happy about doing this because of the inconvenience, postal expense and my concerns in case the documents were misplaced. They told me if I did not comply "we will stop your tax credits". (not we may not be able to make a decision accurately and it might affect your credits, but we WILL).

Now, I suffer from acute clinical depression (which I try hard to fight) and also vertigo (which leaves me exhausted sometimes) and Chronic Fatigue Symptoms, so I work from home and do the best I can to do as much work as I can, but I am limited. I felt I was being unreasonably threatened on unfair grounds and unsound "evidence", so I complained and asked for my case to be escalated to speak to a Manager which they duly did and we basically went round in circles getting nowhere and just repeating the same information so I asked them to please make a note that I was unhappy and wanted to complain and to enter that on the system when it was working again.

I was obviously stressed and worried so I spent most of that night fretting and looking up the internet. Thankfully a friend suggested Mumsnet and that was very helpful - so I am returning to add my story and possibly provide some more helpful advice.

I picked up some useful information;
The Information Commissioner's office ico.org.uk/
was helpful and had instructions and a template for a complaint letter where you can add your own details. ico.org.uk/for-the-public/raising-concerns/

I also checked the Data Protection act and found I have rights to ensure information is accurate and up to date. (which clearly it is not)
I also have rights to know (roughly) certain details about the information held about me and how it is being processed. (sections 7)
www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/section/7

There is also a Government Charter tinyurl.com/qyyhmj2
Which says they will "help and support me to put things right"
"Do all we can to keep the costs of dealing with us as low as possible"
"put mistakes right as soon as we can"
(etc.)

Having had no joy with Concentrix, I checked the paperwork and found a number for HMRC and rang them directly. Again didn't get much joy, so asked to speak to a Manager who said he couldn't do much about an external organisation, but would put me onto Complaints dept, who duly discussed my issues and concerns and raised a complaint and said he would ring back to update me.

I then rang Concentrix for the second time and this time their computer was working. The chap was perfectly nice and polite, apologised and discussed things sensibly, but, again, could not and would not share any information. Though he did explain it may be that a previous resident still had accounts registered with this address. I knew the name, because I had been returning any mail to sender and the Housing Association were able to confirm this name but Concentrix operator said he was not even allowed to confirm or deny this.
I felt that one simple document could end this grief, my rental agreement with the housing association, but it seems I am still obliged to send off ALL these ORIGINAL documents, which obviously I need to copy just in case they misplace them or go missing in the post.

Today HMRC Complaints dept. rang back, apologised Concentrix had not responded and offered me compensation for the distress (£40) and expense of phone calls (£10) if I agreed to close the complaint. I explained it was not about the money, but the principle of the thing if, according to Mumsnet (etc.) there were other people being distressed by this ridiculous process and some frantic with worry. (as detailed in this very forum)
Coincidentally Concentrix e-mail to him arrived during our chat. They said they had spoken with me, we had come to an agreement that I would send documents and I had not made any reference to a complaint with them. (wrong!)

Just after that Concentrix rang and it was their complaints department now, so I listed 7 reasons I was unhappy and the nice man took notes. He said he had also listened to the recordings of my previous calls to them. He was very nice and apologised and seemed to understand my issues entirely and was kind and helpful. He also promised to ring back - and said there might possibly be compensation involved. Again I said it was not about money - though this will cause me a loss of time and some expense, but the principle of sending out letters accusing people of fraud and threatening taking away benefits to which they are entitled.

Furthermore, I don't feel any of the paperwork they have requested would ultimately prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that I have no partner living with me. For example, several years ago I had a good friend down on his luck so I let him stay with me for about 5 months till he got sorted out. I was employed and had my own house, so it was nobody's business (at that time) but in no way would my bank statements or bills reflect any difference whatsoever that would indicate someone was or was not living with me.

It is not over yet - I AM still obliged to send the paperwork. I am still not happy and ultimately I still have to wait for them to make a decision, so I am left worrying over them taking away a part of the income I depend upon.
Nevertheless, I figured if I shared this information perhaps if more of us complain they might change their procedures to something more reasonable and stop frightening people. Perhaps they might even change the wording of their standard letter and the way they respond to telephone callers trying to sort things out.
The crazy thing is I keep 100% honest records and if they had simply said "Mr B, we are carrying out random checks and it would help if you could provide information" I would have complied - not happily, but I have nothing to hide.
I do understand there are those who may be making fraudulent claims, I really do, but I'm not one of them and I resent being accused and threatened on the basis that some other person has not been keeping their accounts up to date at my address. It is crazy and a waste of time and money. There are bad days in my life when I might not have been so able to deal with all of this and I still need to get into town to get some paper to print out those accounts which are now "paper-free" and I probably need another ink cartridge to do it.
Frankly, I'd rather be online trying to get more work in so I can earn more and pay yet more tax to finance the government and fellow citizens, but I have to stop and scan in copies off multiple accounts for several months for my own protection and spend this time on the phone trying to get to the bottom of this so-called "evidence" (which has still not been made clear to me) It is insane, exasperating, frustrating and, in my view, completely unnecessary.

2musketeers I'm sorry to hear you are having to deal with this. I too had the letter at the end of may and fortunately all now sorted I just wanted to ask how the term time thing is effecting your case? Is it not just based on your yearly salary? I too work term time...38 weeks but paid for 44 I think. Like you paid over 12 months . I had the employment and hours worked check i work 30.25 each termtime week and after receiving the letter checked on government Web sites and it suggests special circumstances are given to term time workers as it's not our fault the place closes for x amount of hours per year.so as far as tax credits were concerned I am classed as working 30.25 per week.

Best of luck getting sorted very soon! !

Has anyone actually had any joy with Concentrix?

It seems to me like they have no idea what they are doing. I've just sent complaints to them and to HMRC... not that it will do much good though! It also seems like they target all the single mums.... is this not a bit discriminatory?

I am really really angry at them. I have been waiting 3 months to get any decision out of them! They asked me for all my nursery invoices etc which i sent back within a week! They won't give you details of managers or let you speak to anyone on the decisions team (apparently they don't accept calls). I've been kept on hold for around an hour every time I have called. I told them that I want reimbursed for my call cost as it's not a freephone number, and single mums like me can't afford to be paying large phone bills trying to get them to actually do their job!

I've done nothing wrong, yet I feel like a criminal. It's awful.
I actually can't wait til my son goes to school so that I don't have to pay huge nursery fees!

I hope all of you in the same boat manage to get things sorted soon.
x

I've had my child tax credits stopped since 18th September, i sent them all the information they needed, which they received on 9th October. I've still had no response from concentrix and when i phone up they are not helpful in the slightest. They originally told me it would take 42 days at the most to sort it, which is next week. However, they are now telling me it will be longer than that. I have contacted the CAB now as i am fed up. Can anyone give any advice on when they will sort this? How you can get them to hurry up? And who to complain to? Thanks

nessdj67 · 18/11/2015 10:27

Hi, any updates from anyone? especially anybody who had their original documents lost by Concentrix.. how did you rectify this?

Password9 · 18/11/2015 19:04

hi sorry to drag this thread up maybe newer One. I wondering if any one has done as I am planning. I am refusing to said paperwork and planning on taking to tribunal where I can take paper work to a panel at local centre. Fortunately I'm financially able to wait for the moneys.

I found i a joke that it says if you have problems contact us to see what can be done when clearly they are refusing. I'm afraid off that amount off information falling into wrong hands. I to do not see that any of the info requested will confirm or deny That I'm cohabiting with partner. My partner has here own house own accounts ect.

jessica0987 · 23/11/2015 09:36

Hi CitizenX, thanks so much for your post about Concentrix. I'm in a similar position - very stressed out - so your thread was really useful for me to read. I am just wondering since April when you posted it, and after all your hard work, has this now been resolved? I feel like this is going to go on for months and months as I have only just had the letter and also am thinking about writing to them for more info under the freedom of information act. I hope things are settled for you now - it would be calming to know how long the process took in total. Thanks so much, Jessica

Morecambe1971 · 05/12/2015 12:58

Im also in the same horrific situation, i had the "evidence" letter back in july, u sent all the documents requested, i received my documents back 6 weeks later, i must admit i thought that would be the end of it as i have been living alone with my 10 year old since she was born, then i received the letter in october that they were not happy with the evidence i provided and my payments had stopped. Its so gut wrenching and distressful, i have called Concentrix every week for updates on my Mandetory reconsideration, in one of these calls i was told i was under investigation due to a previous tenant that has flagged up as still having connections with my address, WHAT!!! How can i be responsable for someone who lived at my address 6 years before me not changing their details on some paperwork, i received letters for this person years ago and sent them to the sender, my housing have been great and sent a letter to Concentrix explaining that this person was a previous tenant. Keep getting fobbed off with them saying it will be next week when i will hear then the next week snd so on, my life is on hold and im so distressed, does anyone have any good news regarding their tax credits being returned? X

clairemorley1975 · 15/12/2015 18:08

So I also received a letter today what a joke I'm a single parent and share a flat with a girl but how can they prove anything by bills ect cause I pay some in my name and she does also the rent goes through her account. Also my son is 16 doesn't have a bank account so he's been doing some work for a guy decorating which goes through my account so basically that will go on my statements does anyone know what will happen cause of this

AmyCharlie0604 · 04/01/2016 23:49

I was paying childcare to a childminder for the period they are requesting info for but never claimed it as was only £30 per week and never realised you can claim for help with a childminder and for a child under 2 I thought this only applied for nurseries and over 2 year olds now I'm worried they will say my claim is fraudulent as I never claimed the £30 each week from them..... What was your outcome?

linzm1985 · 07/01/2016 17:19

I recently had a letter from Concentrix (it arrived on December 22nd) stating that they had evidence that there was another adult living with me. They wanted all the information by 10th January, so I called up for an extension, as to get a tenancy agreement and a council tax bills sent, I would have to contact the council, who had closed down for 2 weeks for Christmas. I also wanted to know who this adult was, and what evidence they had.

During the phonecall, they told me that they had evidence my husband, who I separated from in March 2015, still lived with me. They needed to see all my bills from April 2015 up to the present date to show that he doesn't live here. Now, I don't know how that would prove anything, because in all the time he was living with me, never did any of my bills have his name on anyway.

When I asked them what evidence they have, apparently he opened a credit account, in his name and at my address in June 2015. I can only assume this was one of his unpaid debts being passed to a collection agency, and them opening a 'new' account for it.

The thing is, my husband is subject to bail conditions, due to us having a violent relationship and him being in court soon, that prevent him from contacting me unless it is via a third party regarding the children only, or approaching my house. It should definitely prevent him from moving in with me lol. Thats not good enough (even though I could send letters to prove this), and I still have to send all the requested information.

I have paperless bills for everything. My gas and electric are on prepayment. I have online banking, but do not get any paper statements. If I want all my paper statements sending to me from the bank, I have to pay £4 per statement - This is going to cost me £40 for what they want, which I've told them I am not willing to pay so they've advised me to print off what I can of my online banking and send that. This shows the last 200 transactions which will probably be for the last month at most since I did all my christmas shopping online with a lot of card transactions.

MY husband is also a single parent, with his own tax credits claim at his own address, having 2 of my children living with him, but he doesn't seem to be getting investigated over this!

I am now worried that the information I am able to provide, print offs from online banking, print offs of other utility bills I can find online etc won't be sufficient evidence. I asked to speak to a manager earlier on today and was put onto a supervisor, I just wanted to know whether it definitely would be enough, as the advisor was telling me to send anything I could and just write a letter explaining why I can't get more and that would be fine. I then asked for an extension because "I've got a lot of sh*t to try and get together" and the supervisor terminated the call because I'd sworn at her!

I'm already being treated for PTSD due to the stress of my violent relationship, the break up, the fact my husband has taken my 2 youngest children, the police and court stuff, and this is just tipping me over the edge, I'm so worried.

Kahoonas · 07/01/2016 22:40

I received a letter from Concentrix stating of evidence of another adult living with me and I should be claiming as a couple. Sent off what documents they required and also phoned them. 2 adults came up, one who I live with as she's also my landlady as I'm an excluded occupier lodger and the other is my neighbour who lives next door with his wife and child. I am a single parent who rents 2 rooms in a house who my friend owns and also lives there. I have no bills apart from the tv license in my name (only because I already had a direct debit for it) the utilities are in her name as they are her bills. There's no financial ties to either of us. I am certainly not in a relationship with her. We occasionally go out for drink at the pub but that's about as far as socialising as we do. Well apart from food shopping sometimes. How can this be seen as being a couple? Any help would be appreciated 😬

martha1929 · 25/01/2016 15:19

This was very helpful. I too was accused (wrongly) of living with a partner. What really bothered me was the suggestion that because I am a single woman, that a partner automatically suggests that he is paying the household bills and is supporting ME. I sent all the documents they asked for, including a letter I don't think they even read. It is so frustrating. In this modern world you cannot assume the man is paying the bills and single women should not be penalised for having a boyfriend.

They should be asking a different question: has your financial situation changed? Do you still need the tax credits and why? This may or may not have anything to do with a woman's private life/romantic life/relationships, but more to do with her responsibilities and her juggling so many types of work. I think these would be fair questions and reading all of the comments here it is clear that all of the people posting messages on Mumsnet really ought to be heard publicly by HMRC and Concentrix. This is where Mumsnet plays such an important role in a democracy where the channels of communication have broken down between the voters and the government agencies.

linzm1985 · 09/02/2016 01:52

I sent the documents off as requested, deadline was 24th Jan. I sent them on 19th. I received all docs back with a letter saying they'll be in touch soon, on Jan 26th. Not heard anything else yet but have had normal payments each week. Anyone know how long it takes to get 'closed'?

owoleb11 · 09/02/2016 17:49

just had a letter from concentrix stating they have information about a partner. i split up with my partner last may and therefore started a single claim for me and my 3 children. we have only recently in the last 3 weeks decided to give things another shot and he has stayed here on a saturday and sunday for 2 weeks now. we were hoping to give it a 2 week trial to see how it was before i shut my claim down completely just incase we ended up not wanting to get back together. in between all this i recieved this letter and feel like i have been accused of something more sinister. i have severe anxiety and depression and feel like i am going to have a breakdown i have been losing sleep and can barely process any of my thoughts. anyway today i phoned and told them he moved back in on 30th of january now my only worry is that i have made myself look guilty! i would have liked to have let them know after the 2 week trial as i know you have to let them know within 4 weeks of them moving in. i feel like i have had no choice now but to say that we are back together and stop my claim at the risk that because of this added stress we will end up splitting up again soon. i can send all relevant info but like some others on this thread we have payments back and forth because we have 3 children together. we dont have a set agreement on maintenance so he gives me money when hes got it and vice versa when he needs it as we are on good terms.

theapexoflife · 01/03/2016 10:15

I have been living as homeless and concentrix have now stopped my money for the last 8 weeks as i didn't recieve the initial letter. I suffer from depression and already have homeless applications with my local authority and housing associations. For 8 weeks i have strugged to make more than 120 per week to support us three. This has eft me living on only cb and part time wages. Let alone all the debt im attempting to clear i was studying my second year of a bachelors degree and have no deferred as its all too much. I'm this close to being layed off due to my constant stress and now my inability to even get to work. Im in a huge conundrum and fail to see how bank statemwnts prove that im not in a relationship with the person whos flat we stay in. They have a girlfriend and work themselves. I have no clue what to do, and no proofs of my circumstances now in order to get a gouse as homeless. Im stuck and now in a worse postition than i was. Please can someon help me with how i may remedy this.

kimdov · 14/04/2016 13:24

I've had no money for 9 week now and still not sorted

linzm1985 · 14/04/2016 13:49

They never stopped my money and I had a letter on Monday to tell me my claim wouldn't be changed.

Laurajohnson80 · 28/05/2016 23:14

Can anyone please help? I have received a letter from concentrix about evidence of a partner living with me and are asking for household bills, bank statements for the year and a copy of my rental or mortgage agreement..I'm worrying as I have switched bank earlier this year so don't know how in supposed to gather my bank statements from April last year till January this year for a bank I'm no longer with and worried that even though I can send through statements from Feb until now will it be enough? Feel so sick and am so upset over this

anastaisia · 01/06/2016 13:47

Hi Laurajohnson

I've had a similar letter - I've actually sent the form back without any evidence but an explanation that i live with family members and their names to see if that satisfies their enquiries.

But I also have a now closed bank account and phoned them up to ask if they will issue statements and they were fine with that - so you might want to try calling your old bank to ask? I'm getting all my info in case I have to argue it even when they see I'm living in my mum's.

Lizzed39 · 05/06/2016 22:48

I'm also waiting for a response from Contentrix having had to prove I live alone with my children, I had a letter from them on the 19th April saying they would right to me shortly, I have heard nothing but have phoned them to get to the bottom of why I am still waiting! The gentleman was unable to help other than to say another department was dealing with it, and shock horror he could not put me through to that department!!! I asked for the name and address of their complaints department, apparently they don't have one, I asked for the name and address of the ombudsman, he had no idea what I was talking about but went to ask his supervisor who told him that they don't have one!!! Where do I go now??? Is there a complaints department for Concentrix? Do they have an ombudsman? I need this money now as I am seriously beginning to struggle financially. Any advice please 🙏🏼

youknowwhattodo · 06/06/2016 07:05

Lizzes - have they stopped your money?
sorry i have no idea who you would complain to - a few threads have said their local mp has helped.

Aly1976 · 08/06/2016 13:45

I received a letter saying that they had evidence of another adult living with me. My credits ended last July and it is only this year that I have had someone living with me. I phoned concentrix and they still want a years worth of paperwork.

Maisi · 12/06/2016 00:50

They are just bluffing! They likely have no evidence on you - see my post on "bloody irritating" but I have still sent off the stuff but we should all campaign to get this stopped!
