My dp started a job in June and did not hand in his p45 so his tax code was w1 which is emergency tax (I think)
He has just eventually handed in his P45 and his employment have said he wont get a tax rebate and that it doesnt work like that anymore.
When Iv been employed in the past Iv always received a tax rebate in my wage after my tax code has been sorted.
Does anyone know how it works now?

I have been told (in the past but not lots of years ago) that they pay you back by smoothing it out over the remaining months rather than as a lump sum. Don't know if that's still the case.

Now his employers have his P45 they should repay any over deducted tax through his next wages. That is how it works. The only difficulty might be if his tax code from his previous job was lower than the one they've been using- ie if he had a company car, medical insurance, an underpayment being collected. The new employers will have used 503L on a week one basis, so if that is the case he will be underpaid and will effectively have to stay on a week one code (sorry if that is too technical).

Check what code he was on before. If it is less than 503L then that is the case. HTH.

The employment are not right. I just handed in my P45 as well and had to fill in a form to HMRC confirming that i didn't work for three months this tax year. They sent me a coding notice and my workplace have paid the refund to my account.

If he didn't work in april or may, then they sould pay him after the IR have sent the office a coding notice. If he didnt work before april, then he should ask for the the refund from the tax office.
