Pension and fixed term contract

I'm just about to start a six month fixed term contract. It's maternity so I have no idea if it will go permanent or not.

Would it be worth paying into the pension scheme do you think?

I didn't and I ended up contracting for 16 months and now I regret it. That said, if contracting is a long term thing, I'd consider a private pension instead. Will your firm pay contributions you can keep if you do leave in 6 months? If so I'd seriously consider gambling on it being extended, but figure out what happens if you leave the scheme in 6 months. Interested to see what advice you get
