Student Loan Repayment Demand

sadpanda · 26/10/2014 16:47

I have a Student Loan but don't normally have to make any payments as I have no income. I live overseas (within the EU) and havecompleted the overseas assessment each year as requested. Nothing has changed except that this year my disability has deteriorated. I have AS so have problems sorting out paperwork at the best of times. Basically I haven't yet returned the overseas assessment which was sent out in July. Now I have a letter demanding the default repayment amount within 30 days or 'action will be taken to recover the full amount'. My anxiety levels have gone through the roof.

I rung them and explained and said I'd get the form off straight away but they said it's too late now and I have to pay. I have no income. Am I in serious trouble? What action can they take against me?

If you don't earn, I can't quite see how they can take payment, as it's taken out through your earnings! I wouldn't worry. Also you're not in the country so I can't imagine they'll do an international manhunt on this.

They can't do anything to anyone overseas.

Return the form and don't worry Smile

Don't bother calling them, they are very rude over the phone

Return the form, recorded delivery, and keep a copy.

Hope you are ok.

Thank you for the replies, I feel less panicky now. I've just checked and the letter in July isn't the overseas assessment form, it's just a letter telling me that it will be coming soon and what the default amount is if I don't complete it. I haven't received the form itself. I think I'll just return that letter along with the usual statement from DH that I am financially dependent on him.
