Bank transfer - how long?

Anyone help - how long does a bank transfer (made via telephone banking) take between two different banks? Made an hour ago but it's still not in my account.

It's left the other account?

Thanks!

Depends how the sender sent it?

CarpeJugulum · 24/10/2014 08:57

Oops, posted too soon!

This explains faster payments.

Thank you - just trying to get the sender to ring the bank again and find out.

should be same day but it depends on the bank. There are one or two steam driven websites out there.

I was going to say - depends on how much for!
(I was told (several times) if we went into the branch we could transfer £200k same day - when we turned up they actually had a cut off point of 1 or 2pm can't remember which - we turned up 10 mins before purely by chance! - buying a house it was absolutely nerve wracking - just got it through in time - actually a minute later than the deadline but we knew the bank staff and they sorted it for us!) )

In my experience faster payment with NatWest & halifax usually get to the other acc the same day if done before lunch. Barclay's has been next working day.

Thanks for all the replies - the amount is £1600 and it's from RBS to Barclays.

Faster payments I've made and received take a couple of hours generally.

PeppermintInfusion · 24/10/2014 11:37

There are 2 types of bank (iirc worked in a bank many moons ago) one happens instantly (faster payments), the other can take 1-2 working days.

MirandaWest · 24/10/2014 12:05

I made a transfer just after posting between Halifax and Co-op accounts and it has transferred so about 30 min at most.,

The bank I use for most internet banking (so for work -Clydesdale) will delay payments if they think they may be fraudulent etc or if the payment was rejected etc ...but they usually message you (through the webpage, not email! and then you can phone them - but they have phoned me -but it took a few hours and then payment went more or less instantly!).
Also a few years ago (but not happened recently) they used to send things by BACs (so 2-3 days) if they thought it was at all dodgy (found out it was better to pay wages on Mon am than Saturday - on the weekend they often decided they should go by BACs - on a Mon FPS! -they told you when you tried to make the payments)
If you made it by telephone banking though they should have been convinced it was legit - did they not say how long it would take? I would be tempted to phone them and ask ...
Also my brother owed me a lot of money and he paid me by cheque - it appeared to go into my account (not just waiting for clearing) and then disappeared - went to the cash point and thought my account had been hacked! Shock ... was told cos they have to get payments through so fast these days that can happen ...his bank flagged it for a security check - they couldn't contact him by phone so withdrew the payment ...if I had moved it as fast as I was planning to it would have sent me overdrawn!

Thanks all. I've just been on the phone to the sender who has spoke to RBS. They say as far as they are concerned it's left their side so it appears to be in the system somewhere. Confused

they are made the same day, normally within 2 hours. I would double check with the sender that they used your correct sort code and account number as if a digit was wrong/transposed the payment will go to a holding account or get returned to the sender.
