Giving CVC number

I need to renew a membership and want to pay by credit card, there's no facility to do it online.

The form that I need to fill in asks for all credit card details - including the security number. Is this the norm? I know the chances of the application getting lost in the post are tiny but surely I'd be liable if someone got the details?

I'd never put these details in the post just in case it did get lost. Is there a number you can call to do it over the phone or can you send a cheque?

I've had similar, I filled in all except the security number on the form and then rang up and gave the security number on the phone.
