Sinlge mum on SSP (question for friend of colleague)

The friend of a colleague has been told (after collapsong and ending up in hospital) that she may need an op and 3 months off work).

She can not survive on SSP. Would she be entitled to any benefits at all, she has 3 dependant children (though one is aged 18). She doesn't rent, she has a mortgage to pay. We sugested she get in touch with the bank and try and defer payment for a while, is this possible.

Won't even go into the fact that her kids were sent home and left there alone with no one checking they had money or the means to feed themselves.
