Big 4 Supplier: Bamboozled

I rang my gas/elec supplier today to cancel a home insurance agreement on a property (that hus is selling), advised they couldn't do anything and that I would have to be transferred to another depart, however as the property is empty and on a meter I asked if we had to submit final readings and was advised that the property would have to be transferred back to our names as there are 'standing charges' to pay (since it been empty) and then we could close the account...I was told I had to give a name to transfer it across to, I advised I didn't want to do anything just yet as I had no idea what was going on, but was told I had to give a name (so I gave mine) and was then told I would be transferred to the homemove dept. to complete, I was transferred but kept in queue so put the phone down. I'm now really concerned as I have no idea what ive agreed to but my hus believes that if the tenant incurred debts at the property then they have been passed onto me (as I've given my name and they already have our address (as I was also discussing our own account with them). I'm now petried I'm going to get a huge bill (but for what!) I didn't confirm a transfer as I didn't speak to that depart...does anyone have any advice if I should receive a bill I have not agreed to pay any arrears at all...I'm normally good on the phone but feel like ive been bamboozled...estate agent advised that supplier was advised when tenant left...

You can't be charged for a debt that isn't yours.
